About My Work

It’s always colour that attracts me first, whether in the natural world or the man made one.

I particularly enjoy using the medium of watercolour because of its uniquely entertaining properties.

Once the solid paint is liquefied, the transparency becomes obvious and it can be used “wet in wet” – dropping or stroking one wet colour into another.  This encourages the mobility and the pigments may repel or attract or invade each other according to how wet is the paper when they are introduced. Boundaries may or may not be breached! The colours continue to shift throughout the drying time, which is itself dependant upon the actual environment. The longer the drying time, the more room the colours have to weave their magic. Often they will continue to work away during the night. The final result is rarely certain, sometimes dramatic and often surprising – not least to me!

Grayson Perry has coined a term for people who haven’t taken up a formal training. He calls us “Outsider Artists” – I’m very happy with that.

I hope that some of the joy that I find in working this way is transmitted through the pictures you see here.
